Q&A: Can anyone tell me what school supplies I need to home school my sixth grader?

Question by Jennie t: Can anyone tell me what school supplies I need to home school my sixth grader?
We have a very low income. Last year I homeschooled him for the first 9 weeks of the year and used this book I have called “Home Learning Year by Year”, which I still will be using, a few second hand A Becka books (don’t have any now that are grade appropriate), and (mostly) a lot of library books and videos. I also copied worksheets out of one particular library book with a copy machine at the library. I need to do this as cheaply as humanly possible, and other than the limited guidelines my book gives me I have no idea about curriculum and worksheets and such. We are in Tx, in case that matters. I also will need something to help him practice times tables (he forgets them all over again whenever he goes longer than a week w/ out practicing, and to help him practice the names and capitals of states. I had flashcards for those things, but can’t find them now. He is behind his grade level, which is why I want to homeschool. Last year he caught up a LOT after the 9 wks homeschool.
P.S. Last year I would have homeschooled him all year, but finances forced me to go back to work, and I was already attending college. I’ve found that I can do any two of the following three; homeschool, work, college, but not all three at the same time.
O.K. There are too many really great answers for me to pick just one, so I am putting it to a vote! I can’t choose one w/ out feeling like I shortchanged the others!

The public library is FREE free free. Most have an entire section on homeschooling, so you can look at books about it, set up your own program and find books to teach from. I have done so much stuff there, we visit two or three times a week. I even got my sons algebra textbook there, and just renewed until he mastered it.

There are online programs, I think k12 is free is a few states. You can also find several low-cost programs. There are curriculum sites, some of which you can get for free by doing reviews and posting them.

also, contact your local homeschooling support group. They often have borrowing libraries, curriculum exchanges and sometimes parents just give away old curricula for free.

how to test my three year old for home school materials?

Question by : how to test my three year old for home school materials?
my son loves to learn. by 2 1/2 he knows all the letters (both cases), the sounds they make, his colors, shapes..(he argued with me the other day over something being a rectangle and not a square..and he loves crescent moons) anyway im thinking of getting some home schooling materials and start working with him (if he wants to) on stuff..maybe try to teach him to read.
does anyone have some recommendations on sites or stores to look at?
and is there any resources online to help me decide what level materials to get him? some family members have said if we had him tested he would test at 4 or 5.
thank you.
btw im not pushing this at all. he wants to learn and asks questions all the time about letters and names and signs.

There are websites you can go to that have reviews from other home schoolers on curriculum. I don’t use a curriculum with my 3 kids so I don’t use those sites. You can google – home school curriculum reviews.

I’d say he’s pretty on target for a 3 year old. My youngest is 5 now and he could do all of that at 3 as well. I don’t know why you would want to test him though. That seems odd to me.

I don’t think you should get him any curriculum at all, but that’s just my personal opinion. I’m sure most of the other HS moms here would agree that children that age ( and any age really ) learn naturally and don’t need workbooks and print ables to learn.

But, whatever floats your boat. You should really read up on home schooling if you haven’t already, and I do not mean reading this forum. Go to the library and check out as many books as you can on home schooling. It will be worth your while.

Question by juniper: What are the legal requirements for home schooling grade school age kids?
If I decide to home-school one or more of my children, what legal requirements do I have to meet in Illinois? One child is in 5th grade, the other would be in kindergarten next year. The reason would be the lack of quality education and quality teachers available where we live.

Here are the laws and regs for Illinois: http://hslda.org/laws/analysis/Illinois.pdf

Homeschools in IL are considered to be private schools; as long as you are educating your daughter according to her ability, and you keep appropriate records, you should be fine. :)

Question by : How do I put together a 7th grade Home school Course?
This is only temporary but I need 3 months in 2 weeks. Please help.If you have any free Online programs that would be great. Thanks

Answer by hsfromthestart
You might try looking at http://www.worldbook.com for their “typical course of study” list for 7th grade to get an idea of the topics usually included in 7th grade.

However, if you are needing to do this for a temporary program, it sounds like the student was in a school and will return to a school. If this is the case, you will want to check with the school you will be going to to find out what they expect to be covered. You will want to organize it to go with their program of study so that you don’t skip something they covered and expect the student to know, and so you don’t cover the exact material that they’ll cover later in the year and end up with a very bored student later on.

My daughter has some health problems and she needs to home school next school year. She is going to be in 10th grade next year. We want her to do an online homeschooling program. she is is one right now, but its not a very good program.

Do you know any good online home schooling programs? Please, we desperately need help!

Answer by Ms. Phyllis
Take a look at the k12.com website. Many public schools that offer virtual schooling use their materials. Before I began authentic homeschooling, I used K12 via a public school for a much younger child (1st grade), but K12 offers materials on the high school level too.

What are some home school student groups in Billings, Montana?

Question by : What are some home school student groups in Billings, Montana?
I am looking for home school groups that are available for students in billings montana! Pleaseeeeee help!

Best answer:

Answer by Dorothy
Sorry, I’m not in Billings, but I thought I’d try giving some ideas to try to find other homeschool groups. I’m betting you’ve already done most of these but maybe I’ll mention something you haven’t thought of yet.

Start a facebook page that will show up when people search for “Billings” and “homeschool” or “home school”. Include contact information.

Put up 3×5 file cards any place you’d expect other 3×5 cards advertising free kittens: grocery stores, drug stores, the bowling alley, places at the mall, the Y.

Ask all the local churches if they have a homeschool group among their parishioners. I found one at a megachurch near Los Angeles with about a hundred kids in the group.

Call the local scouting councils (both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, also Campfire, 4-H, and any others you can think of around your area) and ask them if they know of any homeschoolers among their membership. My son worked in the BSA council office, they sure knew about him.

If you just can’t find any homeschoolers group, start one.

Ask the local paper if they would interview you for an article about forming a homeschool group. Ask the local TV station if they’d like to do a piece on a homeschool group. Ask them for a list of questions they’ll ask you and expect to be edited down to one minute. If they decline, get a friend to help you make your own video and ask the cable company about local access programming time.

editing to add: hslda.org has a directory of homeschool groups by state and region within the state. You can search there and if you don’t find one you can ask them to list yours.
